ode to books

Cold days + long nights = time for art-making in my cozy studio.

A few weeks ago I became delightfully obsessed with bookmaking. Creating book art from collections (paper ephemera, vintage stationary, my gelli-plate prints, estate sale finds, recyclables) I’ve amassed over the years feels great. The whole process of bookmaking is mesmerizing, from the binding (coptic and machine stitching are beautiful, meditative processes), to the experience of joining many pieces into one multi-dimensional art piece. It’s a great balance of free-form exploration and mathematical focus. I’ve always admired all things books…the way they look, feel, smell, sound…and the worlds they hold & can help us create and for as long as I can remember I’ve kept sketchbooks, diaries and journals.

Making something new and potentially useful from things that could otherwise be overlooked or forgotten (thinking about the estate sale finds and recyclable materials that make up parts of these books) is powerful. My hope is for you to enjoy these dynamic art pieces and add your own creative musings, affirmations, spells, drawings and ideas to these.

This project is my ode to books💛
