The Last Atlantis
Currently in production, this is an experimental documentary about South Louisiana by myself and Jeanine Van Der Loo. The Last Atlantis employs media & visual art to tell the story of the potential future(s) of South Louisiana. To develop content and involve the community in the project, interviews with South Louisianans are conducted in character, with participants speaking from the future as residents of the “Last Atlantis”. In the interviews participants are asked to speak about the importance of South Louisiana, went wrong and swept our beloved home beneath the sea, and what can be done to prevent that from happening. Speakers are depicted as mermaids/men, sea creatures, mutant creatures, wreckage and plants- all set in the underwater world of the “Last Atlantis”. Audio recordings from community interviews are used to create the soundtrack. A range of techniques (animation, live-action, experimental filmmaking) are being used to create our short film.
The Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum is the project’s sponsor and host to our Last Atlantis presentations and workshops. Located in downtown Houma, LA , the museum preserves and promotes the area’s long, colorful and historically important cultural and economic ties with the seafood and water transportation industries, as well as other wetlands and water-based hunting, gathering and mining occupations. The entire museum showcases the relationship between water and the local people who make their living from the water.
This project is supported by funds from Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government’s Arts Funding Program as administered by the Houma Regional Arts Council. The project is also supported by a generous grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Houma Regional Arts Council.
